Explore Angkor – 3 days

The Kingdom of Cambodia is a country of South East Asia with a population of about 15 million people. The capital isPhnom PenhCambodia is the successor of the Khmer Empire, which reigned over almost the entire Indochinese peninsula between the sixth and fourteenth centuries. Cambodia has common borders with ThailandLaos and Vietnam. If Cambodia has been confronted to many wars, today this country opens its borders to travelers. And it is not surprising that many of them tend to fall in love with this mysterious and beautiful country.

Day 1: Siem Reap (BL)

Your first day will begin with pick-up and welcome at the Siem Reap Airport with the transfer to your hotel. Begin your journey with a sightseeing tour of the earliest Angkor Temples. The tour is designed to visit the temples in the historical order, giving you a good view of the architectural development. In the morning, you will visit Hariharalaya, the last Kingdom before Angkor in the 9th Century with Preah Ko, Bakong and Lolei. After the lunch, let’s continue this day with the visits of the second Angkor capital from the 10th century including Prasat Kravan, the East MebonPre Rup and Takeo. Then your tour guide will drive you to the first Angkor Capital, to Phnom Bakheng from the end of the 9th century. Enjoy the sunset with great views over the surrounding landscape. We will then go back to the hotel where you can have a good rest.

Day 2: Angkor & Floating Village Chong Kneas (BL)

Our second day will start with a visit of the nearby Floating Fishing Village of Chong Kneas, complete with schools, restaurants, shops and even a hospital, all moored in the middle of the massive lake. Then, we will go back to Angkor site to continue our visit of the fabulous temples. This morning, we will discover the 3rd Angkor Capital from the 11th century including the Baphuon, Phimeanakas and Northern and Southern Khleang. Before lunch, we will visit the Kingdom of Jayavarman VII with the famous Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of Leper King, built end of the 12th century. After lunch and this incredible morning, we will learn about the Kingdom of Suryavarman II which is the famous and wonderfulAngkor Wat from the 12th century. The largest of the Angkor group and one of the most intact, is an architectural masterpiece. Its perfection in composition, balance, proportions, reliefs and sculpture make it one of the finest monuments in the world. This temple is an expression of Khmer art at its highest point of development. The estimated time for construction of the temple is about 30 years. Admire the sunset on Angkor Wat then return to the hotel.

Overnight at Hotel.

Day 3: Angkor – Departure (BL)

After breakfast you will explore the temples of the last great king in the 12th century. You will begin the day with the discovery of Angkor Thom, the last capital. It was called the “Great City” and as its name implies, it served as the religious and administrative centre of the vast and powerful Khmer Empire. The Royal structures were build of wood and have all perished, but remains of stone monuments let us glimpse at the past grandeur of this once great capital. After Angkor Thom, we will visit the Bayon. It is, with Angkor Wat, one of the favourite monuments among visitors. The Bayon of today with his huge central tower dates to the 13th century and belongs to the third phase of the art style. Jayavarman VII’s goal was to rebuild the capital and to bring the kingdom a new vibrancy, signifying a bright future for the Khmers. The iconography of the four faces on each tower has been widely debated. Then, we will visit one of the most famous temples of Angkor which is Ta Prohm. This temple was left untouched by archaeologists, except for the clearing of a path for visitors. Because of its natural state, it is possible to experience some of the wonder of the early explorers, when they came upon this monument in the middle of the 19th century. In the afternoon, we will finish our tour with the visit of Preah Khan. It is a royal city forming a rectangle surrounded by a moat and similar to Ta Prohm, but with only four enclosures. If time permits it, we will visit Neak Prean.
